The Holy Bible gives little detail about the women of the Bible and their lives. As a result, not much is known about Queen Esther. What little we do know comes from the Book of Esther, found in the Old Testament of the Holy Bible. Esther was born as Hadassah in (presumably) Persia around 518 B.C., after the Jews had been carried away out of Jerusalem by the Babylonians. She was raised with her cousin, Mordecai, who adopted her as his daughter after her parents died. The Book of Esther doesn't tell how Hadassah came to be known as Esther, but the most likely scenario is that Mordecai changed Hadassah's name to the Persian word for star, Esther, to mask her Jewish ancestry when King Ahasuerus (Xerxes I) sent out a decree for maidens in the land to be brought to the palace. Esther quickly found favor with the King and his court and he showered her with kindness. Not long after her arrival in court, the King married her and made her his new wife. Not long after, Mordecai discovered a plot to overthrow the King and made the information known to Esther. She then used her influence with the King to prevent the mass slaughter of the Jewish people. The rest, as they say, is history.
